The Joys/Hells of Pet Ownership!

So after finally being discharged from the hospital (I'll fill you all in about that later) I was looking forward to a relaxing day of recovery. Ha! Of course it couldn't be like that! Taft had just gotten home from work and we were getting ready to go to dinner. Balou was tied up out in the backyard, like he usually is. We heard some barking and were getting ready to tell him to be quiet when we heard growling and his chain break. Taft ran outside to find Balou already back in the backyard, and a lady in the street freaking out. I had heard her yelling at Balou to go home, but we didn't know what happened. Taft hurried and put Balou in his room and we ran outside to try and find the lady and make sure her and her dog were ok, but they were nowhere to be found. We talked to a neighbor to see if they saw anything or knew where she went, but they hadn't seen anything, they just heard all the barking. We knocked on a few doors and gave up. We were pretty worried because I noticed blood on our door, and we weren't sure where it came from yet. Balou got his ear either bit or scratched, we're still not sure, but we didn't know if anything else had happened, and what provoked him to break off his chain.

We went to dinner, and of course forgot the cell phone when we really shouldn't have. Taft's work had been trying to get a hold of him to let him know he was going to be detained and possibly arrested, because Balou had attacked someone! We hurried to the base, got escorted to the "police station", where Taft's flight supervisor was already waiting. The MP's took him away to question him and all that good stuff while I got to wait in the lobby.

About an hour later, they finally let us know that apparently Balou not only bit the dog, but bit the lady as well. Since Taft is responsible for anything anyone does in this family, and therefore the suspect, we can't know what the lady said in her report. We feel really bad for what happened, but we know our dog and know he wouldn't just go after someone for no reason. The only thing we can think of is that she was walking the dog without a leash and he wandered into our yard, Balou got very territorial as any dog would, and went after the dog. The lady freaked out, for good reason, seeing a great dane charge at you would freak anyone out, and she got bit trying to defend her dog. Balou knew he did something wrong cause by the time Taft got out there, he was already back in our yard.

So...getting arrested in the military is a really really really REALLY bad thing. Taft is being charged with endangerment and possibly something else. We don't know what will happen yet. He has to appear in front of the Commander, First Shirt, the Chief, all the people you don't want to get involved with, and see what happens. They can reduce rank/pay, withhold pay, arrest him, kick him out, anything. Or they could just give him a slap on the wrist. Gotta love the waiting game when your career hangs on it! His Undershirt (the dude under the First Shirt, very unfortunate title) was super nice and helpful and let him know how to approach the board and let him know this wouldn't be a career killer and to not be too worried about it. He called him the "poster boy of P.O.L." I'm grateful I have such an amazing husband with such amazing character. That will go a long way with all of this. Regardless, we know our dog did something very wrong and we're totally willing to face the consequences. It just sucks that something totally un-workrelated is going to mess with his career. We'll keep you posted with what happens! Good thing that in Germany you don't have to put your dog down if he bites someone. We would just love to know what the heck happened today that made him do it. Luckily we love our dog...too bad we have crappy luck with pets!
